Save Money or Time on Cleaning?
Is it better to save time by spending money or better to save money by spending time on home cleaning? Of course, it’s a difficult question. That said, if happiness is the goal, researchers have discovered that outsourcing is the way to go.
A study published in 2017 in the National Academy of Sciences found a link between outsourcing to save time and personal happiness. This is especially true when it comes to dreaded chores or tasks that one does not enjoy doing. Also, it’s applicable to all income levels. Home cleaning is a great example!
Researchers did not find a similar link between purchasing material goods and happiness, interestingly. So, what can we learn from this? If a person is saving money to buy a material item, maybe it’s worth another look. Could we find more happiness in saving time for ourselves at the cost of money? Science says yes!

Personal, recreational and leisure time is not a priority in our collective American culture. Between 8 plus hour work days, kids, school, chores, pets, cooking, commuting, etc., it often feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day. As a result, Americans catch up on chores on the weekends. Too often, we work all week, whether at a job or as a stay-at-home parent, only to spend the weekends working even more.
Indeed time is so valuable. Not only is leisure time important for personal health and productivity, those experiences are the ones we cherish and remember most.
